Garden Court is significant as a large, early design of the famed architect, Albert Kahn, and for its association with the family of Hiram Walker. Albert Kahn designed the Garden Court building in 1915 for J. Harrington Walker (of Hiram Walker & Sons, Distillers). The building was rumored to have been constructed so that the son of Whiskey giant Hiram Walker could view Detroit River traffic from his deceased father’s distilleries in Canada during prohibition.

Garden Court was featured on the popular television show “Martin”. The show starred comedian Martin Lawrence and Tisha Campbell. The show revolved around a macho, stubborn, derisive twenty-something radio deejay/talk show host named Martin Payne (played by Lawrence), who worked at an urban talk radio station in Detroit, Michigan.

Originally the building housed thirty-two very large, luxurious apartments. Today, Detroit’s treasured Garden Court features sixty-five beautifully renovated residences.
